What happens instead of submitting photos
Form I-90 replaces or renews an existing Permanent Resident Card, and the card photo is captured by USCIS at a biometric services appointment, not mailed in by you. After filing, you receive an appointment notice; attend it, and USCIS takes the photograph, fingerprints, and signature there. Missing it is dangerous: the instructions warn that failing to attend may mean denial.
If you were about to buy passport photos for an I-90, save the money; most photo websites still sell green card photos the card cannot use. If you are also filing a form that does take prints, such as Form I-485 or Form I-751, those pages carry the print rules, and the free check covers the digital files.
Questions about the I-90 photo
Does Form I-90 need passport photos?
- No. Nothing is submitted by you; USCIS captures the card photo at your biometrics appointment. Any site selling you I-90 photos is selling you something the form does not ask for.
Is I-90 the same as I-751?
- No. I-90 replaces or renews an existing card. I-751 removes conditions on a 2-year conditional card obtained through marriage, and it does require two photos per person.
